
Chakra The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit cakra meaning "wheel" or "circle", and refers to the energy centers in the body. The main seven chakras are aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. In new age practices, each chakra is associated with a certain color. In various traditions chakras are associated with multiple physiological functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element, and other distinguishing characteristics. They are visualized as lotuses with a different number of petals in every chakra.The chakras are thought to vitalize the physical body and are considered the centers of life energy, or prana, (also called chi). The function of the chakras is to spin and draw in this Universal Life Force Energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance. The Seven Basic Chakra 1 - Muladhara or the Base or Root Chakra is related to security, survival and also to basic human potentiality. Symbolized by a lotus with four petals and the color red (or sometimes black). Read as what gives a sense of security, safety and grounding. Blocks around ability to protect the self, abundance. 2 - Swadhisthana or the Sacral Chakra is located in the groin, belly, or spleen, and is related to emotion, sexuality and creativity. Blocks around appropriate sexuality, belief in one's creativity, ability to control and direct one's life force. 3 - Manipura or the Solar Plexus Chakra is related to energy, sense of self and assimilation. Symbolized by a lotus with ten petals and the color yellow. Read as ability to set limits and boundaries, personal power. Blocks around enabling, addictions. 4 - Anahata or the Heart Chakra is related to love, equilibrium, and well-being. Symbolized by a lotus with twelve petals and the color green. Read as connection to others, love, self-love. Blocks around ability to connect, self-esteem, unconditional love. 5 - Vishuddha or the Throat Chakra is related to communication and growth, growth being a form of expression. Symbolized by a lotus with sixteen petals and the color blue. Read as communication, speaking one's truth, honesty. Blocks around truth-telling, self-expression, fear of letting people see who you are. 6 - Ajna or the Third Eye Chakra is the chakra of time and awareness and of light. Symbolized by a lotus with two petals and the color indigo. Read as perception, trust in one's knowledge, intuitive sense. Blocks around believing in one's perceptions, view of reality, ability to know and understand. 7 - Sahasrara or the Crown Chakra is said to be the chakra of consciousness, the master chakra that controls all the others and connects us to the Divine. Symbolized by a lotus with a thousand petals and the color violet (or sometimes white). Read as connection to source, spirituality, oneness, knowing without perception.
